Build the stable first, then the grooming corner, then the unicorns. The stalls, the half-doors with their brass latches, the tack cupboard painted lilac and the hay rack make the room; the floor fills with what a stable is always full of, buckets, bales, crates of apples, a little wheelbarrow of straw. The unicorns are drawn at the size of a pony, so a child standing beside one comes up to its shoulder, and the bunnies, the stable cat and the bluebirds are drawn small enough to sit in the straw at their feet.
Put a bowl of apples on the grooming table and it rides the table. Move the table later and the apples come along. The stable lanterns, the jar of fireflies and the string of star lights are real lights: turn the night on and the stalls glow warm while the unicorns sleep.
Pick the room you build in: the plain stable, or a house with a hayloft upstairs. Change the walls and the floor to suit the straw. Nothing can go wrong and nothing runs out; you stop when it looks like a stable that smells of hay and candy floss.
