Build the classroom first, then the snack, then the children. The walls take the most: drawings, a frieze of shapes, a weather chart, paper chains and a mobile of paper birds. The small tables wait for apple slices on plates, cups of milk, a bowl of crackers and a box of raisins; the shelves for a tower of blocks, a toy dinosaur, a wooden train and a little pile of shells. Then the class: children painting, carrying a cup, waving, two holding hands, one asleep on a cushion, one showing the teacher a painting.
Put a cup of milk on a table and it rides the table. Move the table later and the cup comes along. The lamps and the little lights are real lights: turn the night on and the room glows like the last story before home time.
Pick the room you build in: the plain classroom, or a house with an upstairs for the reading corner. Change the walls and the floor to suit the paint. Nothing can go wrong and nothing runs out; you stop when the room looks noisy, kind and a little sticky.
