Build the room first, then the costumes, then the family. A big furry blue dad in a wig and a tie, a one-eyed green mum in pearls, a mummy grandma with a handbag, a teenage vampire in a sweater vest, a small monster with crooked teeth, and their friends, a werewolf, a friendly witch, a stitched-together cousin. Around them go the armchair with a tail-hole, the clock with too many hands, the lamp with an eye, the cauldron of soup, eyeball sweets, a cake with fangs, and the pets: a round slime, a three-headed puppy, a bat in a bow tie.
Put the cake on the coffee table and it rides the table. Move the table later and the cake comes along. The green fire, the eyeball lights and the lamps are real lights: turn the night on and the room looks exactly as cosy as it is a little odd.
Pick the room you build in: the plain living room, or a house with an upstairs for the costumes. Change the walls and the floor to suit the family. Nothing is scary and nothing can go wrong; you stop when everyone is ready to be convincingly human.
