Build the shop first, then the chairs, then the regulars. The collection of the trade is the biggest part of the sheet: combs, scissors, razors, brushes, bottles of tonic and pots of wax, enough to fill every shelf under every mirror. Then the reception counter in polished wood with its chrome trim, the towel warmer, the old radio, the coffee pot and a plate of biscuits; and the Saturday crowd, a kid in a barber's cape, a grandad in a flat cap, a dad behind his newspaper.
Put a jar of lollipops on the counter and it rides the counter. Move the counter later and the jar comes along. The mirror bulbs and the lamps are real lights: turn the night on and the shop glows warm after the last cut.
Pick the room you build in: the plain shop, or a house with a flat upstairs. Change the walls and the floor to suit the tiles. Nothing can go wrong and nothing runs out; you stop when it looks chatty, tidy and a little old-fashioned.
